Day Eight – Tired Butts, Veggies and Nuts

We all slept in, even the pups. Phil went to the bakery down the street to pick up breakfast. We had scones, croissants and coffee. Perfect way to begin our last day.

After giving a lesson on pruning roses to Char and Phil, we said goodbye to the kids and the granddoggers at around 10:45. Tom estimated that our ride would be about six hours. He was spot on.

We took a brief stop in San Juan Bautista to look at the mission and shed a few layers.

Our goal was to avoid the main highways and take surrounding farms roads. There is a saying that California feeds the world. You believe it when you ride through the Central Valley.

We stopped in Gustine for lunch and the hit the road again. Cathy passed hours trying to identify the crops – cauliflower, yams, lettuce. The almond orchards were dusty but it was cooler riding between them.

After the big lunch, we we’re getting sleepy and our rear-ends were in need of a break. We stopped for a short break and got back on the road.

Pretty soon, the roads were familiar. We were close to home. We rolled into our driveway at about 5:45. We unloaded, unpacked and relaxed.

Our trip was great; we reconnected with loved ones and made new friends. We didn’t see as many lighthouses as we had hoped but we saw some beautiful areas of California and Oregon. Overall, a success.

We saw so many barns today, it was hard to pick one for today’s barn pic. Here is our selection:
