Day One – Putting Miles Behind Us

Today was our longest day, and with that in mind, we set off bright and early.

The route we took was all familiar through the valley, orchards and the smallest mountain range in the world – the Sutter Buttes.

With our extreme heat this summer, California is indeed golden and extremely dry.

We took Hwy. 70 up the Feather River Canyon which a stunningly beautiful. We lost about 45 minutes due to construction delays but at least the scenery was nice.

We turned on Hwy 89 and went through a recent burn area including the town of Greenville which was devastated.

As we climbed in elevation, we entered the high desert agricultural areas of Northern California.

As we entered Oregon, it was the familiar fields of brown, gold and sage brush. We rode along Alkali Lake and Lake Abert. we narrowly avoided a couple of collisions with some rogue tumbleweeds.

The ride soon became very boring and straight but we were on the last leg. We stopped one last time to stretch before rolling into Burns

Today was just under 500 miles and because we haven’t ridden much this summer, we’re feeling the blog’s namesake. The rest of the trip should be a bit easier.

Tomorrow we head to Joseph, OR to stay with our friends for a few days. We’re trying a new route …stay tuned!

Beautiful……my long time friend lives in Live Oak and has a wonderful view of the Sutter Buttes. A huge improvement compared to the view from their previous home in San Jose.
