Day Three – Spritzle and Schnitzel 2.0

When we woke up at 6:30, we checked outside to see if the forecasted rain had begun. It hadn’t, but it smelled like rain. We opted to forego the breakfast at the club and get on the road. Sure enough it started to drizzle before we started to ride. We had our rain gear on so we were set.

We took the route that we had tried last year, from the opposite direction, when we were turned around due to the road was closure. Tom diligently checked Google maps and there were no indicated closures. We set off. Around thirty miles up the road, we started seeing closure signs.

We stopped at a store and asked if we could get through to Randle and we were informed that the road was still closed. The only way around was to go back to Carson (where we started this morning) and route along the Columbia to the east. At least it was a beautiful ride.

It was a really pretty ride along the river with the clouds dipping down. Soon, we saw some blue sky!

We took Hwy 97 north toward Yakima.

The rain stopped and the sky was beautiful. We stopped in the town of Goldendale for lunch and then again in Selah for gas and a stretch.

We passed through hop fields and apple orchards.

Our Zumo picked up our original route outside of Yakima and we continued a slow roll to Leavenworth with heavy semi truck traffic.

We decided to clean up and get right to the business of eating and drinking when we got to Leavenworth! In 2016 we traveled to Radium Hot Springs, BC and got rained on and had German food for dinner. We were happy to replicate the experience here in Leavenworth.

A pretzel with beer cheese and mustard, a Hefeweizen for Tom and an IPA for Cathy as a starter.

We then went to dinner and enjoyed some schnitzel and spatzel and traditional German folk songs on the accordion.

And if that wasn’t enough, the ice cream shop called us in.

Tomorrow we head to Whidbey Island. We are hoping to see friends along the way. Our fingers are crossed that the stars align for that meeting and better weather. This is what it looks like tonight…
