Day Three – Wandering Wallowa

What a day of relaxation we’ve had. It began with two cups of coffee – a real luxury on our trips. We had breakfast on the patio with Chris and Christina with the sun rising up over the mountains that surround Joseph.

After doing a quick load of laundry, we jumped in the car to see Joe’s (Christina’s son) latest construction project in Lostine, just down the lane from where Chris and Christina used to live. Joe happened to be there as well as the owners of the property who are from Salem. The house will sit on a site overlooking the Lostine River. They will have a great view!

Then we toured several other homes that Joe has built and another one currently under construction.

We made our way back to Joesph and headed out to Wallow Lake where we were hoping to see the salmon swimming up the Wallowa River to spawn.

The upper Wallowa river was full of kokanee salmon. These are landlocked descendants of the original sockeye salmon run as a result of the Wallowa Lake Dam completion.

We walked a little further up the river to spot an eagle’s nest.

We had lunch at the Glacier Ridge Grill and then headed back to the house to rest. Their home is beautiful and very welcoming.

This is the Casita that we’re staying in.

We had a delicious candlelight dinner outside as the moon set behind Chief Joseph Mountain.

We had a lovely time with lovely people that we are so grateful to call friends. And, of course a lovely time with the lovely Ananda.

Tomorrow we head to Grangeville, ID. The air quality today wasn’t too bad and we’re hoping for the same or better tomorrow. We will get an early start in case we need to change our route due to smoke.
