Day Two – Peak-a-Boo

Pond at the Lodge at Summer Lake

After last night’s fierce wind, we were dreading a windy ride today. Not so! It was a beautiful, calm morning.

We hit the road around 8:30 and rode through the familiar sage meadows and hay fields. The morning air was full of sweet scents.

This area is full of reminders that this is volcano country.

We soon started rising into forest-lined roads of the Deschutes National Forest, leaving the desert behind us. We stopped for gas and espressos in Bend.

As we grew closer to the Cascade range, Mt Bachelor would peek out of the trees and then disappear completely from our view. This was true of all the peaks we saw today.

We went through Sisters and followed this creek for several miles. It looked like it was glacial fed because the water was milky.

After an hour or so, we started looking for food. We settled on this roadside food truck in Detroit, OR because we were about to turn off onto a desolate forest service road. It was delicious!

We turned onto the forest service road and traveled through a severe burn area that was slowly recovering with shrubbery and wildflowers.

It must have been a devastating fire because the burn scar went for miles.

Every now and again a mountain would appear in full view. We think this is Three Fingered Jack.

There were so many sightings of peaks that we weren’t sure which were which. We’ll have to Google that later.

We’re pretty sure this is Mt. Saint Helens

We dropped down to the Columbia River and crossed over the bridge and into Washington.

We got to our hotel around 5pm. We cleaned up and walked to dinner.

It was a beautiful ride today. Tomorrow looks like we could get some rain so we have our rain suits ready. We will head to Leavenworth, WA tomorrow. It’s one of our favorite towns. Here’s tomorrow’s route…
